Chloe Zwiacher is a 2007 graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy. Among her accolades are Honorable Mention in the short story category of the NFAA youngARTS competition, a Scholastic Regional Gold Key award, and the Interlochen Writing Spirit Award, which she is most proud of. She has been published in the Interlochen Review, and is currently working on her undergraduate degree in English at the University of Iowa. When she is not in Iowa, she is mostly in Alaska, where she cannot see Russia from her house, due to the mountains blocking the view.

Zwiacher says: "The atmosphere has a mass of about five quintillion (5x1018) kg."

Exhale

by Chloe Zwiacher

Somewhere in Arizona

a man dies,

the smoke from his last drag

on his last cigarette

still rising.

Meanwhile,

I’m trying to push air into a man

Who will never breathe the way

I want him to.

I can feel

his atmosphere in my chest,

my sternum cracking

with the pressure of it.
